Kids Who Play Outside Grow Up To Protect Nature

Study: Kids Who Play Outside Grow Up To Protect Nature

It shouldn’t come as a huge shock to anyone, but a new study conducted by Catherine Broom from the Faculty of Education at UBC Okanagan found that 87% of respondents to the study who played outside as children continued to love nature as adults. 84% called it a priority.

But sadly, children are spending more and more time inside affixed to television and computer screens.

What’s clear is that early education in nature is critical to developing an ecological consciousness.

FIT-TECH HABITS GONE BAD

HEALTHY FIT-TECH HABITS GONE BAD

It always feels great to make positive steps toward improved health and fitness, and nowadays, fitness technology makes it even easier. But too much of a good thing could actually lead you down a path to less-healthy behaviors and outcomes. Here are tips for keeping your good intentions on track with three tech-related healthful habits that commonly go awry.

To help underscore qualities that trackers don’t pick up on, some tech experts recommend taking a tech-break every week or two. Deliberately exercise without your tracker so you can better appreciate the important mental and emotional outcomes of exercise, as well.

It’s better to learn how to rely on your own body and mind rather than on high tech.

Barley Reduces Appetite, Lowers Blood Sugar

Food for Thought:

A recent study from Lund University in Sweden shows that barley can rapidly improve health by reducing blood sugar levels and lowering the risk for diabetes. The secret lies in the special mixture of dietary fibers found in barley, which can also curb appetite and reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease, say researchers.

Researchers found that participants’ metabolism improved for up to 14 hours, with additional benefits such as decreases in blood sugar and insulin levels, increases in insulin sensitivity and improved appetite control. The effects increased when the special mixture of dietary fibers in barley kernel reached the gut, stimulating an increase in “good” bacteria and the release of important hormones.

Stop Killing Your Children

Why Sugar Could Be Setting Your Children Up for a Lifetime of Health Problems

Most parents understand that soda, along with candy and sugary breakfast cereals, should be considered rare treats. But even seemingly “healthy foods” contain added sugar, which can easily tally up throughout the day. Currently, added sugar is not listed on the Nutrition Facts label—only total sugar is identified. The new Nutrition Facts Labels (released by 2018) will, however, list added sugars on the food label.

TOPFIT says: Unfortunately, most parents think that “rare treats” means once per meal or snack.  Time to redefine the word “rare”.

Stop killing your children!  What you choose to let your children eat today could be setting them up for a lifetime of misery.

Today, Someday or Never

Someday isn’t a day of the week. How’s your week look? No time for fitness again? We’ve all been there. Maybe you’ve said, “I’ll get fit someday….”

The difficult part of this approach is that life will inevitably throw things at you needing immediate attention. And too many of us expect the most well-rested and focused version of ourselves to show up for workouts. We think, “I’ll start next week after the project deadline at the end of this week.” But when next week comes, it is not the bright green valley of energy and time that we had imagined it would be. Our energy is still divided among multiple responsibilities. And the week after that also has some unforeseen little challenges coming at you. So you put it off again. Someday slides easily into “never,” and you can wake up wondering, “How did this happen?”
